Preparing for the AFA exam: General skills and knowledge
This is the module that it all starts with: it must be passed before you can sit the other AFA certification exams. It covers the insurance industry and all the required legal knowledge.
The format of the official exam
A questionnaire comprising around twenty questions, divided into two topics: the insurance industry and legal knowledge. The exam is held via videoconference, with supervision in place to detect any attempts to cheat.
- This is the compulsory introductory module: you must take it before any of the others.
- The result arrives about a week later.
- Make sure you have a quiet place, a stable internet connection and a clear desk.
Examination fees: 400 CHF, payable to the AFA (unrelated to Caelys access).

Why start with this module?
Because the certification requirements stipulate that the ‘General Skills and Knowledge’ module must be passed before candidates can sit the exams for the other modules (health, non-life, life).

What happens if you fail?
There is no waiting period before re-enrolling, but failing the course will result in a second payment of the fees. This is the most expensive module: please check the terms and conditions of your enrolment with the AFA.
