Preparing for the AFA Life insurance exam
The life insurance module is the most demanding part of the certification process: it culminates in an oral examination in front of two examiners. It covers the Swiss pension system in its entirety, from the three pillars to social insurance and inheritance planning.
The format of the official exam
There are two stages: a written test, followed by a 30-minute oral exam in front of two examiners. You will be presented with a practical case study: you must analyse it, propose a solution and defend your reasoning. It is not enough simply to know the correct answer; you must be able to present it effectively in the oral exam.
- The Life module is an exception: for its oral exam, you must stick to the exam dates set by the organisation (re-registration is not available 24 hours a day).
- This is the format that most closely resembles a job interview: our practical exercises help you practise thinking out loud, rather than just ticking boxes.
Examination fees: 200 CHF, payable to the AFA (unrelated to Caelys access).

Frequently Asked Questions
What makes the life module more difficult?
The oral exam. In front of two examiners, you must analyse a practical case, propose a solution and defend it. You are assessed on your reasoning, not just on knowing the correct answer.
Can you re-enrol straight away if you fail?
No, unlike the other modules. For the oral exam for the ‘Life’ module, you will need to wait for the next session organised by the body. Please check the arrangements with the AFA.
What does the life insurance module cover?
The Swiss pension system as a whole: 1st pillar (AVS/AI/PC), 2nd pillar (LPP), 3rd pillar (3a/3b, life insurance, taxation, inheritance) and social insurance.
